The first step in the design process

Ah, the state fair. Aside from having brilliant inventions come to me I also learn SO MUCH! But not just about cows and tractors and the average number of teeth in a carnie’s mouth. No, I also learn about design!

The first step in the design process is finding the clipart

I captured this picture in one of the expo halls and dammit, this is the most brilliant thing I’ve ever read. I mean, this is EXACTLY where I’ve been going wrong. If the gloss is throwing it off, it reads “The first step in the design process is finding the clipart”. I guess the second step is to print everything out on really glossy stuff so that it is hard to photograph.

Seriously though, this is sheer brilliance. If I owned an agency I would make this my slogan. I would print this on t-shirts, mousepads, cheap pens, plastic cups, and all manner of notepads. Spread the word, the first step has been spoken.

Now, don’t you think this is more of a metaphor? LIke, the first step in design is finding the clip art within yourself, man. This of course, leads me to one of my greatest fears as an artist. What if I go to great lengths to dredge up the most profound parts of me, and all that’s there is like a bad line drawing of a pencil with arms and a facial expression?
